Maui’s amazing landscapes and beaches also play host to this stunning multicolored volcanic park landscape in the caldera of a giant dormant volcano. Legendary for its sunrise vistas which can be seen from the edge of Haleakalā, this diverse park consists of a dormant but massive volcanic crater on sacred land, amazing lunar landscapes and trails, the largest collection of beautiful and endangered species of any park in the park system, groves of exotic trees and bamboo, and rainforests that run down to Maui’s iconic coastlines.
PLEASE NOTE: This is not an NPS affiliated residency this year.
Maui’s Volcanic Wonderland.
While Maui is justly famed for its coastline beaches and resorts, humpback whales, surfing and snorkeling, it is also a gem of biodiversity and watersheds that span the entire island. But at the center of it is Haleakalā National Park, a dormant volcanic erosional valley that is also a cultural treasure for the Hawaiian people. The park’s landscapes are unique and beautiful in their unique color and textures — and the park is also a perfect place for watching the night skies blaze out as well as the legendary sunrises over the Pacific from the summit of Haleakalā. NPAF’s past artists in residence include Astrophotographer Stan Honda, Landscape Pianist Hunter Noack, among others.
More information about the Haleakalā National Park can be found on the park website at (For Park Information Only, please do not contact the park about Artist in Residency questions. For questions about the AIR, please contact NPAF. )
