POETS IN PARKS: GETTYSBURG 2019
Mr. Bellin-Oka will be in residency at Gettysburg, under the joint sponsorship of The Poetry Foundation and The Gettysburg Foundation in October of this Year. As part of the Poets in Parks Tour, Mr. Bellin-Oka will give his first reading at the Museum and Visitors Center at Gettysburg National Military Park at 1 pm on Friday, October 11th, 2019.
The current national debate about the representation and memorial of Civil War history provides extraordinary opportunities for education and discussion. The interpretation rangers at Gettysburg National Military Park address the tensions between commemoration, civic memory, and critique year-round in their work with the public. The poems that Mr. Bellin-Oka plans to work on at the park will continue in this theme.
As he says: “I plan to write poems that imagine Lincoln on the verge of giving his address there and poems in the imagined voices of soldiers on both sides. He also wants to collect and respond to the poetic record of response to the battlefield. “In addition, I will write poems that are contemporary responses to well-known poems about the battlefield and the Civil War.”
