Artist in Residence FAQ

When will applicants be notified of their acceptance to be the Death Valley National Park Resident Artist? At least two months prior to the commencement of the AIR term for which they applied, in this case, August 4th, 2019

Is there a preferred time to arrive at the AiR? Yes. For ease of coordination and communication with the Stovepipe Wells Resort, Artists or Artist couples must schedule their arrival between 10-3 on weekdays, and must have their own transportation for the month of the residency.

What does this residency offer? Lodging and meals at Stovepipe Wells, all the hotel amenities, including pool, plus a $1000 stipend.

Is this an any and all-media residency? No, this one is brand new and just for photographers. We will offer the next all-media residency at Death Valley in January 2020.

Question: Is a vehicle required for this residency? Yes. Artists must have their own transportation for the month of the residency. Some of the parks are large in and of themselves, and others quite isolated.

Will I need to rent a car? Yes. As above, Death Valley is very isolated and you need to be inspired by places you can only get with a car or truck.

Can I bring my pet or my family? No, except as they fall into normal daily visitor guidelines. Couples are welcome to apply.

What is the application cost? $55 for one photographer, $110 for a couple.

Will there be chances to display my artwork during the Artist in Residence time period? Yes, the plan is for the artist to contribute three presentations, workshops or lectures at locations in the Park.
