Two Residencies:

with $1000 Stipend

The National Parks Arts Foundation (NPAF) in association with Chaco Culture National Historical Park of the National Park Service offers TWO RESIDENCIES in northwest New Mexico, close to the Four Corners, Iconic Shiprock, and Monument Valley.

Comprising eleven beautifully preserved pueblos or ceremonial structures, Chaco Canyon is the premier site to experience the amazing and mysterious Chacoan culture. This beautiful and isolated complex is the historical trace of the sacred ancestral culture to many of the existing pueblos of the Southwest. The park is also a Dark Skies certified location, one of the ideal places for astronomy, astrophotography and other Night Sky artistic practice.
The residencies are open to all Artists working in ANY MEDIA. So, Video Art, Installation, Collage, Photo-manipulation, Sound Sculpture, Performance, Dance, Screendance, are encouraged, anything that can free the mind, widen experience and still connect people to the Park experience in tangible and intangible ways. Please email us if you have specific questions about your project.

ACCOMMODATIONS: This is a no-studio / plein air residency. Living quarters are comfortable and suitable for a single artist or a couple. You must be able to work in your living space or at large in the park.
The artist in residence will be granted a venue for at least one Public Presentation of a workshop, lecture or concert. If artists would like to propose more park, visitor or community engagement in the form of more workshops, lectures or anything above and beyond these parameters we encourage you to go into these specifics in your application submission.

Founded as an Antiquities Monument in 1907, the park was operated for most of the 20th century as a anthropological storehouse of knowledge and evidence of the Chacoan Culture. The Monument expanded to its present boundaries and park designation in 1980.  It received its’ UNESCO World Heritage Site designation in 1987. The park is located in the open plains of Northwestern New Mexico, sharing borders with the Navajo Nation and BLM land.  It is approximately one and a half hours from the closest city, Farmington, and two hours and forty minutes from Albuquerque.

In addition to their residency, the selected artist will have the opportunity to present lectures and workshops, exhibit their art and will donate art inspired by their stay in the park to Chaco Culture National Historical Park or National Parks Collections, through the NPAF. This program aims to fulfill and exceed goals for Park Arts Programs as indicated in the NPS guiding document issued for the Centennial of the Park Service to be celebrated in 2017.NPAF will also be partnering with other partners, the National Park Service, park partners, recognized museums, galleries, schools and underserved peoples organizations to cross-promote Chaco Culture National Historic Park Artist in Residence Program, both locally and nationally.
